Interview with Major C.B. [Charles Basil?] Price about his military service with the 14th Canadian Infantry Battalion.~Price, who enlisted in August 1914, begins with a discussion of the promotion of officers, the spirit of "adventure and patriotism" motivating the enlisted men and the duties of the Regimental Sergeant Major.~Turning to his experience at Second Ypres, Price recalls "a most appalling state of affairs" of unearthing bodies buried in the bottom of the trenches from a previous battle. He remembers the "stream" of French Colonial invantry fleeing the gas while "tearing at their throats and chests." "It was a frightful sight." "Wounded at Festubert, Price rejoined the 14th battalion and fought at the battle of Mount Sorrel where they were "thrown into battle" with no artillery support and suffered heavy losses. "The battalion was completely decimated for the time being."~After serving as an instructor in England during 1917 and 1918, Price rejoined the battalion for the last 100 days of war. At Amiens, he describes the "open warfare" and the joint attack with the Australians when the troops encountered a "nest of [enemy] machine guns" and saw "burning tanks." He also describes the Canadian cavalry charge which was "completely wiped out by German machine gun fire." At the battle for Cangnicourt, he recalls that the "Germans were fighting hard" and the Canadians lost 37 officers in one month.~Commanding the battalion at the Canal du Nord, Price talks about the preliminary barrage, standing on each other's shoulders to cross the canal and the taking of Sains-les-Marquion. Hit by friendly fire, Price "ended his battle service" hospitalized in England.~He concludes with his return to many of the battle sites after Armistice. "It was so strange to go through all that country without a sound after hearing that racket for so many years."
