Captain Walter Critchley and Lieutenant J. C. Matheson are interviewed about their experiences in World War I with the 10th Canadian Infantry Battalion.~Critchley, who first saw action at Ploegsteertt with the British "who saw that we didn't do anything foolish," discusses the Second Battle of Ypres. With the objective of St. Julien's Wood, he recalls experiencing a "cloud" which he thought was "ludite." From the Grafenstafel Ridge he could see the German cavalry massing and comments, "We had no idea what was ahead of us." He also describes the forced march to Bethune as a "killing march."~Turning to the Vimy battle, he comments that "we learned that artillery preparation was essential to a good attack." After a three-day bombardment, the Canadians attacked and gained the ridge where "we could see for miles." Critchley ended his service with the Royal Flying Corps: "I had in three years in the trenches and I didn't think my luck was going to hang out any longer."~Lieutenant Matheson recalls the battle of Festubert saying, "We were outgunned in every conceivable manner right from the start." "The Hun...had everything" including the Jack Johnsons, mortars and thousands of machine guns." At Mount Sorrel, Matheson recounts the heavy loss of life from the German "pipsqueak" shells tht contained mustard gas.~Matheson speaks of "the only black mark in the 10th Battalion" involving a dismissed officer and a sargeant major who was shot for cowardice. Matheson concludes with a description of the occupying armies' advance into Germany and the prolonged demobilization in England.
