Interview with Corporal J. [Jack?] H. Bowyer of the 5th Canadian Infantry Battalion about his experiences in many of the battles of World War I. Assigned to a reconnaissance mission at St. Julien at the Second Ypres, Bowyer recalls rescuing many wounded in the battle. He remembers encountering the enemy disguised in Canadian Scottish uniforms trying to entice the Canadians deeper into enemy infested woods. Corporal Bowyer talks about relieving the British Post Office Rifles, erecting a "battle stop" to rescue the wounded and later being posted to a cummunications trench where 14 fellow soldiers were killed instantly.~At the battle of Hill 60, the bombardment left only eight survivors. Bowyer also saw action at Mount Sorrel where seven of fifty-six men survived. Recalling how the "battle swung back and forth", Bowyer provides details of the battle of the Somme, in particular, the battle fought at the Regina trench when he recieved the Military Medal as a company commander.~On a lighter note, Bowyer remembers the feast for Christmas 1916 where the men devoured apples, nuts and a roasted pig. Sadly, he also recalls a "prolonged bender" which lead to an open arrest and a court martial trial. At Vimy, as the troops prepared for a "big show", Bowyer talks about receiving a "bullet in the guts" and was invalided to England, however, he returned for the battle at Passchendaele where he remembers being gassed and invalided again.
