This is part of the television coverage of the 1959 royal tour of Canada by Queen Elizabeth II and her husband Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, focusing on the official opening and dedication of the St. Lawrence Seaway on June 26, 1959. through footage of speeches by Queen Elizabeth II and U.S. President Dwight D. Eisenhower at the opening in Montreal, Quebec, the importance of this waterway as an international transportation link, an outstanding engineering achievement, and a symbol of cooperation between Canada and the United States, is emphasized. Additional noteworthy footage includes Prince Philip escorting Mrs. Eisenhower aboard the Yacht Britannia; and the yacht observed by crowds as it passes through the St. Lambert Lock, the "symbolic gateway to the heart of the continent".
