The presentation of colours and guidons to five Canadian regiments by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II during the 1967 royal visit to Canada in its centennial year is recorded in this live coverage hosted by Lloyd Robertson. The royal crest appears on screen while recorded music plays until the ceremony begins. Initial footage includes shots of 5,000 guests on Parliament Hill and the five regiments: the 1st Battalion of the Canadian Guards; the 2nd Battalion of the Canadian Guards; the Ontario Regiment; the Sherbrooke Hussars; and the Cameron Highlanders of Ottawa. With Lloyd Robertson is Godfrey Talbot of the British Broadcasting Corporation who is covering the royal tour in Canada. Godfrey and Robertson discuss the royal itinerary and this ceremony, peculiar to the United Kingdom and the British Commonwealth and unique in Canada because of the number of colours being presented at once. Robertson explains the origin of colours, which began as a means of identifying troops in battle and evolved into symbols of pride and loyalty, and the guidon, similar to a pennant, carried by the cavalry as a symbol of regimental spirit.~Footage of the ceremony includes the arrival of Her Majesty accompanied by Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh, her Equerry, her Private Secretary and her Canadian Secretary; and the Queen greeting Paul Hellyer, Minister of Defence; Leo Cadieux, Associate Minister of Defence; General Jean-Victor Allard, Chief of Defence Staff; and [Major General Roger Rolais] the colonel of the Canadian Guards and Honorary Colonel of the Cameron Highlanders of Ottawa. Her Majesty is shown inspecting the troops in a special jeep, accompanied by [Lieutenant Colonel C.D. Carlson], the Commanding Officer, 2nd Battalion, Canadian Guards and officer of this parade. Fourteen chaplains and two chaplains general consecrate the colours and guidon, shown in close-up inserts on screen. Her Majesty delivers a speech on the symbolism of today's ceremony and Major General Roger Rolais makes the pledge of loyalty. Final footage shows the march past by each regiment, displaying its new colours. <60mn>
