Series consists of :
-Correspondence and notes on the United States-New Brunswick Boundary, January-July 1830 (vol.1, files 1-2);
-Miscellaneous documents related to Andrew Stuart, s.d.,1834-1838 (vol.1, file 3).
-Commissions for Andrew Stuart in the Militia and as a Solicitor General, 1838 and 1852 (vol.2, file 2).
-Letterbook containing copies of letters sent from Quebec and Montreal by A.S. between 13 November 1838 and 28 January 1840 (mostly in 1838), shortly after Andrew Stuart was appointed Solicitor General of Lower Canada. Letters are sent to prominent officials such as the Governor General and the Civil Secretary and they relate largely to questions arising from proceedings against the Patriotes. Letterbook also contains analysis of legal issues relating to prerogative tights of the Crown (vol.1, file 4).

Stuart, Andrew, 1785-1840 : Andrew Stuart, the fifth son of Rev. John Stuart, studied law and became after 1807 an important lawyer in the Quebec region. He represented Lower Town Quebec in the House of Assembly between 1814 and 1820, and then Upper Town from 1820 to 1830 and 1836-1838. He was appointed Solicitor General of Lower Canada on October 1838 and kept this office until his death. Besides his official functions, Stuart was involved in the literary circles and learned societies of the time.

Historique de la conservation :

The Letterbook was transferred from the McGill University Archives en January 1998. It was presented to the McGill's Law Library in January 1955 by Professor C.S. Le Mesurier. Other material in this series was acquired in 1917.
