This is program 1 in a series of 5 lectures by Dr. Jacques Monet, Associate Professor of History at the University of Ottawa, produced at CJOH-TV in Ottawa. The lecture series examines efforts by generations of Quebec politicians to achieve autonomy for the province. It describes how these efforts have differed over time, as these separatists confronted new issues such as the relationship of church and state, urbanization and conscription. The theme of this program is the nationalism of Louis-Joseph Papineau, who inspired political leaders in Lower Canada to proclaim a short-lived sovereign republic.
