Francis tells, in flashback, a tale about a sinister old man, Dr. Caligari, who ran a carnival sideshow: Cesare, a somnabulist who, awakened by Dr. Caligari, would foretell the future. A number of mysterious murders were committed and the story teller relates how he became suspicious of Caligari and Cesare. After Cesare had tried to abduct Jane, Francis' lady friend, he trailed Caligari to an insane asylum. He discovered there that the director of the asylum was none other than Caligari himself. A search in the director's office revealed that the director had been carrying out evil experiments on sonmambulism inspired by the work of an 11th century monk called Caligari. The director betrayed himself when the body of Cesare, killed in an accident, was brought to him, and he had to be restrained. His tale finished, Francis enters the foyer of the same asylum to which he referred in his story. He finds "Cesare", "Jane", and other story characters, all inmates like him. The director appears and Francis, recognizing "Caligari", attacks him and has to be restrained in turn. In a parting word, the director recognizes Francis' delusion and remarks that now he knows how to cure him. <51mn>
