Fonds consists of handwritten notes on the organization of the Liberal Party, strategies for fundraising and patronage, official memoranda of the National Liberal Federation (NLF), and personal correspondence to various individuals in the Liberal Party, as well as some memorabilia. Among the items are correspondence from Lester B. Pearson, Louis St. Laurent, Walter Gordon, H. Erskine Kidd, John J. Robinette and Paul Hellyer.

Matthews, A. Bruce, 1909-1991 : Albert Bruce Matthews, Liberal Party fundraiser, businessman, military commander, was born in Ottawa on 12 August 1909, and educated at Upper Canada College and the University of Geneva in Switzerland. He joined the reserve army in 1928, and went overseas with the First Canadian Division at the outbreak of WWII. In 1943 he won the Distinguished Service Order for action under fire in Sicily. He was promoted to major-general in 1944, commanding the Second Canadian Division in the liberation of Holland. He was President of Excelsior Life Insurance Company and joined friends E.P. Taylor and John (Bud) McDougald in building Argus Corporation, a major powerful business conglomerate.

Matthews was active in the Liberal Party, and from 1958 to 1961 was President of the National Liberal Federation (NLF), which position included fundraising as a major part of its function. He was National Treasurer of the NLF until the fall of 1963. Mr. Matthews died 12 September 1991 in Toronto.
