The fonds consists of correspondence, reports and extracts from journals of Methodist ministers related to their missionary activities in British North America. The reports comment on the social, economic, cultural, and religious lives of the people living in the mission territories and include references to hardships, health conditions and problems encountered by the missionaires, as well as tensions related to rival missions. The papers are arranged chronologically within territorial divisions, as follows: Nova Scotia, 1791-1819; New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island, 1804-1818; Canada (Quebec & Upper Canada), 1812-1818; Newfoundland, 1805-1818, and the United States, 1801-1818.

Wesleyan Methodist Missionary Society. The Methodist Church Overseas Division. (London, England) : The Wesleyan Methodist Missionary Society was founded in 1786, but as early as 1784 Dr. Thomas Coke (1747-1814) had joined with John Wesley in ordaining Methodist ministers for America. Their missionary activities in the West Indies and in British North America were carried on under Dr. Coke's direction until his death.

The Wesleyan Methodist Missionary Society merged in 1933 with the Primitive Methodist Missionary Society (the latter founded in 1870) to form the Methodist Missionary Society. Subsequently, this organization changed its name to The Methodist Church Overseas Division.

A typescript summary guide to the Archives of the Methodist Missionary Society and inventories to correspondence from 1791 to 1902 are available in the University of London, School of Oriental and African Studies, Archives and Mauscripts Division Reading Room. The fiches were acquired from Inter Documentation Company, AG, Zug, Switzerland (No. H-2705) and represent a portion of the North American corerspondence. The originals of the Wesleyan Methodist Missionary Society's papers were deposited in 1978 at the University of London, School of Oriental and African Studies.
