Fonds consists of selections of records from the papers of Sir Edward Codrington relating to naval operations during the War of 1812. The records consist of letters and plans, 1814-1817, including letters from Codrington to his wife in London; plan and orders of attack on New Orleans; letter to the Lords of the Admiralty regarding bounty of captured ships; plan of disposition of ships; correspondence regarding the operation against Washington; and a letter book, surveys, order book and memoranda book, HMS Tonnant, 1814-1815. This material is located on microfilm reels A-2075 and A-2076.

Codrington, Sir Edward, 1770-1851 : Admiral Sir Edward Codrington was born in 1770 and entered the Navy in July 1783. After serving continuously on the Halifax, Mediterranean, and home stations, he was confirmed in the rank of lieutenant in 1793 and appointed to the Pegasus. In 1794, he was transferred to the Queen Charlotte, Howe's flagship. Subsequently, he commanded the fireship Comet and the sloop La Babet in home waters and in 1796, he was appointed captain of the Druid.

Unemployed from 1797 to 1805, he commissioned the Orion in 1805 and was present at Trafalgar. In 1808, he commanded the Blake for six years in the Mediterranean, during the Walcheren expedition, 1809, and off the coast of Spain. He was then appointed to the Tonnant, going to the North American Station in 1814 where he organized the supplies of the army at the capture of Washington. He was promoted to rear-admiral in 1814, remaining on the station until 1815. It was not until 1826 that he again saw active service when he was appointed commander-in-chief, Mediterranean, flying his flag aboard the Asia. During this command he undertook operations against the pirates in the Levant. He was recalled in 1828 and appointed to command the Channel Squadron in 1831. He then became member of Parliament for Devonport, 1832 to 1839 and was appointed commander-in-chief, Portsmouth, a post held until 1842.

Codrington married Jane, daughter of Jasper Hall in 1802, and died in 1851.
