Fonds consists of files of correspondence, manuscripts of articles and clippings relating to Louis Bloomfield's legal career and his involvement in politics and community affairs. The fonds is arranged in the following series: Personal and business affairs, Political affairs, Community Activities, International law and legal practice, Articles and manuscripts and Daily journals and diaries.

The fonds also contains photographs related to the career of Louis Bloomfield including photos of Bloomfield receiving honours and awards, 1960-1975.

Included in horizontal storage are several certificates and degrees, container 15.

Bloomfield, Louis M., 1906-1984 : Louis M. Bloomfield, born in Montreal in 1906, received his B.A. from McGill University in 1927 and his L.L.M. from the University of Montreal in 1930. He was admitted to the Quebec Bar in 1930 and created a K.C. in 1948.

Bloomfield practised international law with Phillips, Bloomfield, Vineberg and Goodman, 1930-1970. He acted for King Carol of Romania who sought entry into Canada after World War II and was an executor of the Lady Davis estate. He was elected a member of the Tribunal Mixte Tangier (Int. Zone) 1949. He was co-founder of the International Law Association Canadian Branch and was a council member of the American Society of International Law, 1968-1972. During World War II he served with the RCASC, retiring with the rank of major.

L.M. Bloomfield also had an active public service career. He served as an executive member, National Capital Commission, 1963-1976; president, Quebec Council of St. John; co-founder and vice-president, World Wild Life Fund Canada; and was Honorary Consul General, Republic of Liberia from 1962 until the time of his death in 1984. He was a member of the Board of Governors of the Hebrew University, the Weizmann Institute of Science and the Technion Israel Institute of Technology.

L.M. Bloomfield wrote 4 books on international law: The British Honduras-Guatemala Dispute, 1953; Egypt, Israel and the Gulf of Aqaba in International Law, 1967; Grundung und Aufbau Kanadischer Aktiengesellschaften, 1960; and La Convention de Varsovie dans une Optique Canadienne, 1976. He authored and co-authored many articles and reviews mostly in the field of international law.

He received an L.L.D. from St. Francis Xavier University in 1964, a Ph.D. (honoris causa) from the Hebrew University in 1973 and a D.C.L. from St. Thomas University in 1973.
