Fonds consists of records relating to Ralph Hein's architectural practice in the Ottawa area, 1968-1984. There are files relating to Hein's various architectural partnerships, 1971-1984. A large part of the fonds relates to architectural and engineering work done at the Atomic Energy of Canada Ltd. installations in Kanata/South March, Mississauga, and Ottawa. There are also records relating to the National Research Council projects throughout Ottawa, 1979-1984, Noranda Mines Ltd., 1976-1980 and also various other projects during the years 1975-1981.

Fonds consists of photographic material depicting construction projects including schools, public buildings, churches, research laboratories, plants, subway stations, banks, hospitals, apartments and office complexes for clients in and around Montreal and Ottawa and Newfoundland, 1951-1984.

Dobush, Stewart, Hein, Architect : The architectural firms of Stewart Wilson and Peter Dobush were established in Montreal in 1951. They joined in 1955 and formed the firm of Dobush and Stewart. Over the years the name of the firm varied due to the location of the business which was mostly carried on in Quebec and Ontario and the addition of the name of architects working on projects to the company name. The most prominent partnerships were Dobush, Stewart, Bourke (1960-1965) and Dobush, Stewart, Bourque, Longpré, Marchand, Goudreau (1966-1973). An Ottawa branch opened in 1971. The firm specialized in the design of houses, elementary schools, churches, hospitals, factories, apartments and office complexes in Montreal, Ottawa and Newfoundland. A large number of buildings and laboratories were designed for the National Research Council of Canada, Eldorado Mining Co., Pulp and Paper Research Institute of Canada, Domtar Ltd., Cargill Grain Co. Ltd., British Titan Products and Atomic Energy of Canada Ltd.

Ralph Hein was born in Norway in 1926. He was educated at Bauschule der Hansesadt, in Hamburg, Germany where he received his diploma in architecture in 1950. He arrived in Canada in 1954 and in 1960 became a partner with Dobush and Stewart in Montreal. He opened an Ottawa branch of the firm in 1971 and was instrumental in the design of structures for scientific establishments such as Atomic Energy Canada Ltd. (AECL), Eldorado Nuclear, National Research Council (NRC), Noranda Mines Ltd., etc. His other work consisted of local schools, churches, commercial establishments and residences. Hein was a partner in various architectural firms such as Dobush, Stewart, Hein, Longpré, Marchand, Goudreau (1976-1978) and Hein Greenbaum (1981-1984). Hein died on 21 March 1984.
