Henry Weisbach, president, is second from the left, back row.Biographie/Histoire administrative :Central Organisation of Sudeten German Club in Canada : Sudeten German Social Democrats fled their homeland fearing persecution after the Sudetenland was absorbed by National Socialist Germany in 1938. Through negotiations between the Canadian and British governments and Sudeten German representatives, arrangements were worked out whereby over one thousand of the refugees came to Canada. Here they first settled on the land, picking up farms in such areas as St. Walburg, Saskatchewan and Tomslake, British Columbia. When employment opportunities increased with the outbreak of war, most of the rural settlers gradually drifted to the urban centres, many coming to find work in the booming economy of eastern Canada, in particular in Toronto, Hamilton and Montreal. Others settled in Edmonton or Vancouver.
Here they organized local Sudeten German clubs soon after their arrival. Delegates of these clubs, as well as representatives of clubs which had previously been formed in rural areas, met in 1957 to form an umbrella organization - the Central Organization of Sudeten German Clubs.
The Central Organization seeks to represent Sudeten German interests and views with both the Canadian and foreign governments. In this regard, it has encouraged the Canadian government to pass legislation to ameliorate the plight of the elderly in Canada. It represented Sudeten Germans in negotiations with the Federal Republic of Germany, to obtain restitution for losses suffered following the absorption of the Sudetenland by National Socialist Germany. Also, the Organization has worked in close co-operation with other Social Democratic parties in Canada to forward the interest of labour through the political process.Information additionnelle :Note générale :Textual and photographic material received from the Central Organization of Sudeten German Clubs in Canada through the courtesy of Henry Weisbach in 1976 and 1981.
