Fonds consists of correspondence concerning a variety of subjects such as the concern over university cut-backs in Slavic studies. A substantial portion of the collection documents the financial support the CAS received from federal agencies, including the Canada Council and the Canadian Federation for the Humanities. There are also files on the association's executive meetings and the annual general meetings held in conjunction with the Learned Societies Conferences. Other material consists of membership records, publications information and correspondence with various international Slavic studies associations.

Canadian Association of Slavists : The Canadian Association of Slavists, Learned Society, is a national organization of professional academics, students and others interested in Russian-Area and Eastern European Studies. Members are also interested in studies relating to Canadian communities of Slavic origin. The CAS was founded in 1954, with a membership of 30 and currently there are about 500 members.

Throughout its history, the CAS has organized and sponsored forums for the discussion of Slavic research and teaching in the humanities and social sciences. It participated in the 1965 National Conference on Canadian Slavs and since 1971, has participated in the Learned Societies Conferences held annually at different universities.

Other activities have included publishing newsletters and the academic periodical Canadian Slavonic Papers, lobbying governments to prevent university cut-backs in Slavic studies, promoting Russian-Area and Canadian exchanges, and corresponding with the international Slavic Studies community.

Note générale :

The fonds has been accumulated through a number of accessions dating from 1976. The material deposited in 1989, originated from the offices of CAS Secretary-Treasurer, Professor Bihdan Krawchenko, University of Alberta, Edmonton.

Historique de la conservation :

The papers originated in the offices of the secretary-treasurers and the officers (rotating positions) of the Canadian Association of Slavists. The papers have largely been created and kept by the Association's executives who, for the most part, have been fulltime university professors and who maintained the CAS records during their term of office. Some of the documents found in the collection were generated at the universities where the CAS officers worked.
