Fonds consists of correspondence, memoranda, press releases, minutes, reports, print matter, news clippings, and other documents relating to the Board of Trustees of the Maritime Transportation Unions and to the unions it administered, particularly the Seafarers' International Union of Canada; reference files on ships, consisting largely of news clippings; and correspondence, memoranda, reports, minutes, print matter, and other material on "The Financial Times of Canada".

The fonds includes portraits of trustees and staff members of the Board of Trustees of the Maritime Transportation Unions, 1963-1964; photographs of merchant ships, passenger ships, icebreakers, warships, and tugboats of various nationalities, primarily sailing in the St. Lawrence River, the Great Lakes, the Lachine Canal, the Saguenay River, and visiting the port of Montreal, ca. 1942-1969.

Also included are original cartoons by Robert LaPalme dated 1963-1964, drawn for the Financial Times.

The motion pictures are statements by officials of the Board of the Maritime Transportation Unions and the Seafarers' International Union about Hal Banks.The sound recordings are audio interviews conducted by Clayton Sinclair for a radio documentary about Montreal Gazette sports editor Austin Dink Carroll and a talk by labour leader Charles Hibbert Millard.

Sinclair, Clayton, 1930- : Clayton Sinclair, journalist and public relations officer, was born in Winnipeg in 1930 and worked as a general reporter for the "Winnipeg Free Press" (1949-1952) and as a writer and editor for "The Gazette" of Montreal, specializing in shipping and transportation (1952-1963). In the fall of 1963, he was hired as assistant secretary and public relations officer by the newly formed Board of Trustees of the Maritime Transportation Unions (BTMTU). The BTMTU was created by an act of Parliament, following the recommendations of the Norris Commission which had investigated inter-union violence and disruptions in shipping on the Great Lakes and St Lawrence Seaway. Although the BTMTU administered the affairs of several maritime transportation unions, in practice its efforts were concentrated on establishing democratic practices in the Seafarers' International Union of Canada.

Sinclair was released from the BTMTU circa July 1965 along with some other employees who were closely associated with trustee Charles Millard, who was sometimes at odds with the other trustees regarding the duration and nature of the trusteeship. However, Sinclair continued to follow developments in the BTMTU and stayed in touch with Millard. From 1965 to his retirement in 1992, Sinclair worked as a writer, Toronto bureau chief (1970-1975), and associate editor for a national business weekly newspaper, "The Financial Times of Canada".
