1 mapLangue du document :anglaisPortée et contenu :Fonds consists of material documenting Hadawi's interest in Palestinian Arab rights and the Arab-Israeli conflict. As such, it includes memoranda, briefs and copies of speeches regarding the Arab-Israeli controversy presented before various bodies as well as published material and correspondence with government figures and newspaper editors regarding the issue. Topics of particular interest to Hadawi include property restoration and indemnification in Palestine and Arab and Palestinian information services in Canada and the U.S.A.
Fonds also consists of a soils map of Palestine.Provenance :Biographie/Histoire administrative :Hadawi, Sami, b. 1904-2004 : Sami Hadawi, public official, writer and lecturer, was born in Jerusalem, Palestine, in 1904. He was a Christian Arab of the Anglican faith. In the years 1920-1948 he served with the Palestine Mandate Government, reaching the office of Official Land Valuer and Inspector of Tax Assessments. In 1943 he received the M.B.E. for outstanding service. Displaced in 1948 by the Israeli occupation of Jerusalem, he served in various capacities and offices abroad: Chief of Inland Revenue with the Jordanian Ministry of Finance (1949-1952); Land Specialist with the Palestine Conciliation Commission at the U.N. (1952-1955); Arab Refugee Office in New York (1955-1958) which he established with a fellow Palestinian, and adviser to the Iraqi Mission to the U.N. (1955-1958); Director of Liaison Office of the Arab States Delegation Office of the League of Arab States in New York, advisor to the Yemeni Mission to the U.N. and head of the Arab Information Centre in Dallas, Texas (1959-1964); head of the Chicago and Ottawa branch offices of the League of Arab States (1965); founder and first director of the Institute for Palestine Studies in Beirut (1965-1967).
Retiring in Toronto, Sami Hadawi wrote profusely and lectured extensively on Palestine, especially on land matters and ownership, in which area he was recognized as the leading authority. He published in excess of thirty books and pamphlets.
