Original copy of The Ottawa Tennis and Lawn Bowling Club 1881-1981: A Short History on the Occasion of Its Centennial (1981). Originals, 32 pages; photocopy, 5 pages.

Ottawa Tennis and Lawn Bowling Club Ltd : The Ottawa Tennis and Lawn Bowling Club Limited was founded in 1881. Its charter in 1939 stated the company was to promote tennis, lawn bowling and other sports, and provision for its members of the usual privileges, advantages and accommodation of a club.

The first location of the Club was on Elgin Street and was officially opened 16 June, 1882. The second location, opened on 31 May 1888, was on Cartier Square in the rear of the former Drill Hall. During these years, a Club member, Mr. J. W. de C. O'Grady was on the council of the Canadian Lawn Tennis Association in Toronto which was formed in 1890.

The Club moved twice in a four year span. In 1902, the third move took place and the new location was on Patterson Avenue, and in 1906 the fourth move was between Third and Fourth Avenues, west of Lyon Street. Finally in 1922, the Club moved to its final location on Cameron Avenue. However, the Club suffered financially during the 1920s and 1930s due to low membership and the Great Depression. Not being able to overcome its financial troubles, the Club was forced into bankruptcy in 1939.

The Club was re-formed in 1939 but still suffered the same lagging membership until the 1960s. The 1960s and 1970s brought the Club to new heights of prosperity, and in 1981, the Club celebrated its centennial anniversary.
