Religious Society of Friends (Quakers) in Canada. Ottawa (Ont.), Monthly Meeting : The Religious Society of Friends, commonly called Quakers which originated in seventeenth century England during the Civil War, was established in Canada at the end of the eighteenth and beginning of the nineteenth centuries by Friends who migrated from the U.S.A., largely as a result of the unpopularity that their attitude towards the War of the American Revolution had brought them. They came chiefly from the states of the Atlantic seaboard and settled mainly in the Bay of Quinté (1798), Niagara (1799), and Yonge Street (1804) areas of Upper Canada (see MG 17, G 1). The present group in Ottawa dates from the second half of the twentieth century.

The Ottawa Friends began to record their meetings on 6 June 1954, although they did not make application for establishment as a Monthly Meeting of the Society until 17 April 1957. The Meeting was formally established and organized 4 October 1957 - 8 January 1958.
