German, Bay of Quinte (Ont.), fl. 1776-1787 (family) : John German immigrated from Germany to Fort Edward, some 14 miles north of Saratoga, New York. By 1776, he was well established in the area. At the outbreak of the American Revolution, he proved his loyalty to his adopted King by joining the British forces on Lake Champlain on 4 November 1776. He fought in Captain Edward Jessup's Company, 2nd Battalion, King's Loyal American Regiment of New York. His sons John Jr. (II), Christopher and Jacob enlisted in the same corps on 5 August 1780. In July 1781, John German I was in Captain Sherwood's Company and in 1782, he was in Captain John Jones' Company. By October 1778, John German's family was in Quebec. After the Revolution, John I and his family joined Peter Vanalstyne's party when it passed through Sorel and settled in Adolphustown, Ontario in 1784. By 1787, John I was located in Sydney Township. Over the years, members of this family settled in several townships in the Bay of Quinte area.
