Fonds consists of files relating to the editing of the Canadian Field-Naturalist including editorials, reaction to editorials, correspondence with assistant editors, proposed series, instructions to contributors and expenses, 1972-1982; correspondence, minutes and reports from the Ottawa Field-Naturalists' Club relating to its publication including extracts from council meetings, Publications Committee and an Ad-Hoc Committee on OF-NC Publications, 1973-1981; research material on Canadian Women Natural Scientists Exhibit done by Smith for the National Museum of Natural Science, 1975-1976.

Smith, Lorraine C : Lorraine C. Smith, physiologist and editor, received her BA from the University of Toronto in physiology and biochemistry. Her graduate work in physiology was also done at the University of Toronto. Smith received her Ph.D in the same subject from the University of Ottawa. From 1970 to 1977 she was a research fellow and sessional lecturer in the Department of Biology at Carleton University. Between 1976 and 1986 she was an Assistant Editor with the federal department of Fisheries and Oceans where she was responsible for manuscripts submitted for publication. Since 1986 Smith has been with Health and Welfare Canada appraising potential health hazards in foods.

From 1972 to 1981 Smith was the volunteer editor of the Canadian Field-Naturalist which has been started in 1889 by the Ottawa Field-Naturalists' Club (OF-NC). During her tenure as editor, Smith tried to turn the CFN into a rigorous scientific journal by changing the format and style, imposing standards, instituting a refereeing policy and publishing results from new areas of field research. Smith resigned because she felt she was not receiving enough support.
