Canada Starch Company : Canada Starch Company, Canada's first corn starch manufacturing industry, was founded in 1858 by William T. Benson (1824-1885), cornstarch manufacturer, and a former partner in the English chemical firm of Blythe and Benson. Upon his emigration to Canada in 1858, Benson formed the partnership of Benson & Aspden and established the Canada Starch Works at Edwardsburg, Canada West (renamed Cardinal in 1880). In 1865, the firm was reorganized as a joint stock company under the name of the Edwardsburg Starch Company. W.T. Benson, who acted as Vice-President of the firm, died in 1885; his son, George F. Benson, was President from 1894 until 1938, and his grandson, George E. Benson Jr., succeeded to the presidency upon his father's death.

In 1906, the firm was reorganized to include the Brantford Starch Works and the Imperial Starch Company of Prescott, Ontario and was renamed the Canada Starch Company. In 1918, an agreement was made under which Corn Products Refining Company, a United States firm, acquired a 55 percent interest, with the understanding that Canada Starch would continue to operate independently of the American parent. The parent firm's interest was expanded to 100 percent in 1954. When Best Foods merged with Corn Products in the United States in 1959, its Canadian operation, Best Foods (Canadian) Ltd., became part of the Canada Starch operation.

The Company's products include laundry starch, industrial starches which are used in many industries, and a wide variety of foods. Most of their products are derived from corn.
