Collection consists of three excerpts from the report, 1 January 1726, made by John Armstrong, George Gregory, T. White, L. Smelt, and Charles Wills. The material copied comprises: Statements of ordnance and stores at Annapolis Royal, Nova Scotia, 6 August 1725 (ff. 116-119v); and at Placentia, Newfoundland, 1 June 1725 (ff. 120-121v); as well as an Estimate of the Charge of the Office of Ordnance for the Year 1723 (f. 150). Great Britain. Board of Ordnance : The Master General of the Ordnance, whose office dated from 1483, worked with other officials on a Board of Ordnance, frequently known as the Ordnance Office. It is the oldest of the offices whose records are included in the War Office group at the Public Record Office. One of the important early duties of the Ordnance, which remained so until the middle of the nineteenth century, was to supply weapons and ammunition to both the army and the navy. Even when there was no requirement for a permanent administrative organization to oversee military affairs, there did exist a need for an authority to supervise the procurement, maintenance, storage, and issue when necessary, of the nation's ordnance. This use of a common ministry of supply resulted in some beneficial standardization while reducing the opportunities to bid up prices. The Board of Ordnance also had charge, for most of its existence, of the artillery and engineer corps, fortifications, and barracks although the last category was administered by a separate Barrackmaster General from 1793 to 1822. The Stowe Manuscripts formed part of the collection of manuscripts made by the Grenville family at Stowe, their Buckinghamshire family seat. When Richard Grenville, 2nd Duke of Buckingham and Chandos (1797-1861), was forced to sell his library in 1849, it was purchased by the 4th Earl of Ashburnham, whose son Bertram, 5th Earl of Ashburnham (1840-1913), sold it to the nation in 1883. The part of the manuscript collection that went to the British Library is kept as a separate collection, catalogued as Stowe MSS. 1-1085., Stowe Manuscripts 482 consists of a folio volume of 150 pages, which contains a "State of Ordnance and Stores at the several Forts and Castles in Great Britain, as also at the four Forreigne Garrisons" [Annapolis in Nova Scotia, Gibraltar, Placentia in Newfoundland, and Port Mahon in Minorca]: a detailed account of the stores, etc., at each place, with a summary of the whole, together with those on board ships at sea, taken 1 January 1726. In 1914, the National Archives of Canada transcribed two small excerpts (ff. 116-121v, 150) from Stowe MSS. 482.
