A Bengali woman has trouble managing a poor household consisting of her young daughter, Durga, and an aged relative, while her husband is away looking for work. She worries about Durga's petty pilfering and about the old woman's influence on the girl. At the birth of his son Apu, the father, in an expansive mood, talks about his plans for making money. A few years go by. Durga is a comely teenager and Apu is of school age. Mother is still struggling to make ends meet. After a visit with friends, Durga is accused of having stolen a necklace. A search fails to back the accusation. Relations between the mother and the old woman deteriorate to the point where the former threatens to throw the old woman out. A festival is held in the village and a troop of actors put on a play. Later, while looking for a lost calf, the two children find the old relative dead in the woods. The father leaves for the city to look for work. One of Durga's friends gets married. A brass band plays It's a Long Way to Tipperary in the village square. Reacting to these signs that another world exists somewhere, Durga makes up as a grown-up and she and Apu walk across a field to watch a train go by. Durga catches a bad cold in a torrential downpour. While the storm rages and turns the house into a shambles, Durga sinks lower and lower and dies. Later, the father returns with money and gifts only to find his world destroyed. Sick with grief, the couple decide to move to the city. Before leaving, Apu finds the necklace that Durga had, in fact, stolen. Without telling anyone, he throws it into a stream. <1h 42mn 28s>
