Also included are drawings depicting views in Brussels, Belgium from Coleville's notebooks. 1945.Provenance :Nom(s) additionnel(s) :Biographie/Histoire administrative :Colville, Alex, 1920-2013 : Alex Colville, artist, was born in Toronto, Ontario, but has spent most of his life in the Maritimes. From 1946 until his retirement in 1963, Colville taught art at Mount Allison University in Sackville, New Brunswick. He has also held positions as artist-in-residence at universities in California and Germany. One of Canada's best-known artists, his work is collected and exhibited internationally.
Colville joined the Canadian Infantry during the Second World War, in May 1942. In 1944 he was sent to London, England, and appointed an offical war artist in the Canadian Army. His first major assignment was, however, with a Navy operation in the Mediterranean 1944. He was later assigned to the 3rd Canadian Infantry Division in Holland and Germany, 1944-1945, and was sent to record the Belsen concentration camp in 1945. He was responsible for an exhibition of war art in Amsterdam 1945.
