Retained in RG 5 are a letterbook of the Provincial Registrar, 1866-1867 (series B 48), documents relating to land titles, 1832-1863 (series B 18), letters patent and commissions, 1788-1858 (series B 5), Attorney General's drafts of commissions and letters patent and his fiats authorizing the issuance of commissions and letters patent, 1805-1863 (series B 28), naturalization registers, 1828-1850 (series B 47), and returns of bankruptcies prepared for the Parliamentary session of 1847 (series B 19). Correspondence, petitions and other documents relating to the issuance of commissions and letters patent may be found with the numbered correspondence files in RG 5, C 1. Lists of documents prepared and fees collected by the Provincial Secretary and Registrar are found with the audited public accounts in RG 1, series E 15 B and E 15 C.

Upper Canada and Canada West. Provincial Registrar : In his capacity as Registrar, the Provincial Secretary was responsible for preserving the entrybooks or registers of documents issued over the Great Seal and searching them when necessary to provide copies of documents on request, and for preparing returns of information requested by the Legislature. The registers and entrybooks recorded an abstract or the full text of commissions, letters patent and instruments of revocation. Most of the bound entrybooks and registers, as well as many loose documents retained by the Registrar, fell into the custody of the Registrar General of Canada and are now found in RG 68. With these are an extensive series of index volumes. His office copies of the Blue Books of Statistics, however, are found in RG 1, E 13 and the oaths of allegiance for which he was custodian are now in RG 1, E 11.

For a brief period after the union of Upper and Lower Canada, the office of Registrar was separated from that of Provincial Secretary. Before, during and after that period, the records of the registrar's function were maintained as distinct series.

Textual records (Papier) A nominal index to the Naturalization Registers in series B 47 was published in Families (vol. 18/3, vol. 19/1-3 and vol. 20/1). Nominal entries also appear in the General Index. The index for the naturalization registers compiled in the Registrar's office is now found in RG 68, in the General Index of Commissions to 1841 (pages 583-612) and after 1841 (pages 162-195), but the volume identification makes use of this index awkward. Note générale :

Although the province of Upper Canada existed only between 1791 and 1841, and the province of Canada between 1841 and 1867, records of earlier and later dates have been incorporated into some series.
