Fonds also consists of textual records for Anna Russell: family and personal material, n.d., [1874] 1883-1984; correspondence, n.d., 1924-1953; manuscripts, n.d.; memorabilia, n.d., 1935-1953; career files, n.d., 1890-1980; journals, 1944, 1947; financial records, 1949-1950; publications, 1956, 1960; and clippings and magazine articles, n.d., 1943-1984.
The fonds contains photographs depicting the lives and careers of Charles Goldhamer and Anna Russell, including childhood photos and formal portraits of Russell; and photographs of Goldhamer as a war artist, 1870-1985.
Included in the fonds are sketches, illuminated manuscripts, reproductions of wood engravings done for the International Nickel Company of Canada, woodcuts of various subjects, a logo, a cover design, and a drawing of a figure on a stairway, done by Arthur Lismer, n.d, 1928-1969.
The fonds also contains audio recordings pertaining to Russell's career, including recordings of her practising for her performances, performing
and music. The recordings appear to document her one-woman show, in which she parodied serious music, ca. [1950-1969].
Fonds consists of 12 architectural drawings of the Cental Technical School, Toronto, and the Art Centre.Provenance :Nom(s) additionnel(s) :Biographie/Histoire administrative :Goldhamer, Charles, 1903-1985 : Charles Goldhamer (1903-1985), born in Philadelphia, came to Canada with his family settling first in Owen Sound, Ontario and later in Toronto, Ontario. He attended Parkdale Collegiate Institute, was employed as an artist for Eaton's department store's advertising pages, and produced a regular cartoon for the Star Weekly.
Goldhamer attended the Ontario College of Art, 1922-1926 studying under Arthur Lismer. After graduation he joined the staff of the Ontario College of Art. In 1928 he began teaching at the Central Technical School, Toronto, where he remained for over forty years, the last fourteen as Chairman of the Art Department.
Charles Goldhamer was a contributing artist to the Circle of Young Canada (The Globe) between 1926-1928 under the pen name Ensign. In 1928 he did a series of lithographs on Ontario with Tom Stone and was commissioned by MacMillan to illustrate text books for the Department of Education, Manitoba. He designed posters for the Empire Marketing Board, London, England and the Department of Agriculture, Ottawa. He also illustrated Standard Oil Company of New Jersey's magazine, The Lamp. He was the author of How to Draw (War Services Committee 1942) and Occupations in the Graphic Art (University of New York 1965).
In 1938 Goldhamer exhibited many of his water colours in "A Century of Canadian Art" exhibition at the Tate Gallery, London. He served overseas as an official war artist with the R.C.A.F. from 1943-1946, producing watercolours and drawings of burned airmen at the plastic surgery hospital at East Grimstead in East Sussex, England. Following the war he was appointed by the National War Services Committee to organize arts and crafts groups for the R.C.A.F. Goldhamer married the singer-comédienne Anna Russell in 1948; they divorced in 1954.Information additionnelle :Note générale :Received in 1985, 1986 and 1991 from the estate of Charles Goldhamer through Margot B.
