Fonds consists of material relating to Andrew Cowan and his career with the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation and is divided into the following series: CBC, Aide-Mémoire; Chronological Correspondence; Administrative Memoranda and Reports; CBC Overseas Unit and CBC International Service; CBC Armed Forces and Northern Service Subject Files; Indian-Eskimo Association of Canada; CBC and the Northern Service; CBC Miscellaneous Subject Series. Also included are personal correspondence and notes and reference material.

The fonds also contains photographic material depicting activities of Andrew Cowan of the C.B.C. in Europe; reunion of Canadian War Correspondents' Association; portraits of Cowan, Douglas La Chance and Danièle Dorice. Photographs by Newton, Capital Press and Herb Nott.

Also included are sound recordings of CBC talks and discussions about the social and economic problems of Eskimos and Indians in Canada, 1969.

Cowan, Andrew Gillespie, 1910-1987 : Andrew Gillespie Cowan, broadcaster and public servant, was born in Hamilton, Ont., but spent much of his youth in rural Saskatchewan and in Alberta. After graduating from the University of Glasgow in Scotland, Cowan continued his studies in economics at Brookings Institute, Washington, D.C., and at Harvard University, Boston. He worked for some time as an economist with a Royal Commission on the Highlands and Islands of Scotland, and on the secretariat of the International Wheat Advisory Committee in London.

In 1940 Cowan joined the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation as a producer for Talks and Public Affairs in the prairie region. Shortly after this he was organizer of Talks and Public Affairs for the whole western region as well as organizer of the National Labour Forum for Toronto and Ottawa. Cowan served as a CBC war correspondent in North Africa and Europe from 1943 until he returned to Toronto in 1945 to co-ordinate CBC Rehabilitation broadcasts for returning servicemen.

In January 1946 he moved to London as European representative of the CBC and he remained in that position until 1954. From 1954 to 1958 he was supervisor of Troop Broadcasts in Ottawa. Then in 1958 Cowan became director of the CBC Northern and Armed Forces Service, a position he held until his retirement in 1976. Mr. Cowan died in 1987, at the age of 76.
