A number of letters describe her teaching routine and what the young girls were studying, while most letters record observations on social life and customs in Russia. Her letters note the concerts and operas attended in St. Petersburg, the musical soirées and dances held in the family seat of Ekaterinoslav (South Russia or Ukraine), and her travels through European cities in the Austro-Hungarian Empire, Germany, Switzerland and France. Several letters allude to the growing political unrest throughout Russia including attempts on the lives of the Czar and several of his ministers. She also notes the effect of Czar Alexander's assassination on the nobility and on the townspeople in 1881. Several letters describe the beginning of the pogroms against the Jews. There is also some information on the activities of the Russian peasants and their low social status.Provenance :Biographie/Histoire administrative :Coles, Amy Louise, 1859-1939 : Amy Louise Coles was born (13 July 1859) and educated in England. From 1879 to 1882 she was governess to two children, both girls, of a noble Russian family. She taught the children English literature and history. Miss Coles travelled throughout Europe in 1883 and, some years later, emigrated to Canada. In 1984 she married Edward George Kirby at Montreal, thereafter residing in the Eastern Townships. Together they had seven children as follows: Frances Vera Kirby, Guy Hurlston Kirby, Edward Kirby, Thomas Howard Kirby, Margaret Amy Kirby, Winifred Maud Kirby, and Katherine May Kirby.
