Item is an essay, [1786], attributed to Dr. Gardner, "late of Boston in New England" who may possibly be Dr. Silvester Gardiner, the Loyalist physician and landowner: "Some facts collected, and observations made on the Fisheries and Government of Newfoundland, showing the many advantages, which will arise to this Kingdom on colonizing that Island, to which is added a plan for a speedy settling it." Gardiner, Silvester, 1708-1786 : Loyalist, physician, surgeon, and landowner.

Dr. Silvester Gardiner (1708-1786) was born, 29 June 1708, at South Kingston, Rhode Island. He was the seventh child of a cordwainer, William Gardiner, by his wife Abigail, née Remington. He was educated privately by his brother-in-law, the Reverend James MacSparran (1693-1757), who encouraged his medical bent and made it possible for him to study abroad for eight years. Gardiner returned to Boston, ca. 1735, and established an extensive and lucrative practice, as well as a number of profitable apothecary shops, not only in Boston, but also in Meriden and Hartford, Connecticut.

In 1753, he began his activities in developing land in Maine and became the chief promoter of the Kennebec Company for that purpose. The towns of Pittston and Gardiner were built by him. Since he was well-known to be an ardent Loyalist, all his property was confiscated during the American Revolution, and he was forced to flee to Halifax, from which he went to New York, where he remained until 1778, when he embarked for England. He returned to America in 1785 and settled at Newport, Rhode Island. He succeeded in recovering a small part of his land in Maine before his sudden death from fever, 8 August 1786. He had six children by the first of his three wives, Anne, daughter of the wealthy Boston physician, Dr. John Gibbins (or Gibbons).
