Fonds consists of material which documents O'Neil's career as a geologist and educator. The material illustrates the extent and the findings of his numerous expeditions to the Canadian Arctic with the Geological Survey of Canada and geological explorations conducted as an independent consultant. As such, the fonds contains diaries, field notes and correspondence relevant to his explorations as well as material collected during his many years of affiliation with McGill University both as a student and as a professor; as well as his Ph.D. thesis from Yale, correspondence with his family and material related to the Royal Society of Canada, n.d., 1898-1958.

The fonds contains photographs and postcards related to the life and career of J.J. O'Neill.

Included in the fonds are geographic and geological maps, plans, and sketches which cover southeastern British Columbia, the Northwest Territories, and northern India. Many of these documents were drawn or annotated by J.J. O'Neill.

Also included in the fonds is a King George VI coronation medal, 1937.

O'Neill, John Johnston, 1886-1956 : J.J. (Jack) O'Neill was born at Port Colborne, Ontario where he received his elementary education. He received his B.Sc. and M.Sc. in mining and geology at McGill University in 1909 and 1910, his Ph.D in structural geology and petrography from Yale in 1912 and completed a Post-Doctorate in structural and metamorphic geology at Wisconsin in 1912 and 1913. He received an honorary Doctor of Science degree from McGill in 1952.

He was a student and field assistant with the Geological Survey of Canada 1909-1913 and was selected as geologist for the Canadian Arctic Expedition of 1913. He worked with the Geological Survey from 1914 to 1920 exploring copper deposits in the Canadian North. He resigned in 1920 and served as geologist 1920-1921 with Whitehall Petroleum Co. in Kashmir and British India.

He returned to Canada in 1921 to accept the post of Assistant Professor of Geology McGill University rising to the head of the Department of Geology in 1929, Dean of Science 1935-1939 and Dean of the Faculty of Graduate studies 1938-1942; Dean of Engineering 1942 to 1952. He served as Vice-Principal of McGill 1949 to 1952 retiring in 1952.

During his career at McGill he also acted as a consulting geologist and field geologist particularly in the 1920s. He worked for White Beaver Oil Co. 1921-1922 in the Hay river basin. He worked on the geology of the Cape Breton coal fields in 1923 and 1924. He was geologist for the Victoria Sydicate in Western Canada 1926-1928 and a geologist for the Pend Oreille Mines and Metals Co. 1928-1930.

He was Chairman of the Board of Governors of the Arctic Institute of North America in 1949 and President of the Royal Society of Canada from 1950-1951.
