A small excerpt from the Egremont Collection of the papers of the mathematician and astronomer Thomas Harriot (Add. MSS. 6789, f. 441): "Three reasons to prove that there is a passage from the Northwest into the South Sea." The reasons are based on information obtained by Admiral Sir Thomas Button (d. 1634) on his voyage of exploration into Hudson Bay, 1612-1613. Transcript, 1 page.

Egremont, George O'Brien Wyndham, Earl of, 1751-1837 : Patron of fine art.

Sir George O'Brien Wyndham, 3rd Earl of Egremont (1751-1837), was the son and heir of Sir Charles Wyndham, 2nd Earl of Egremont, by Alicia Maria, daughter of George, 2nd Baron Carpenter. He succeeded to the earldom at the age of 12. Though not without political ability, his interests lay mainly in other areas. He was notable for his stockbreeding and for his patronage of artists - such as Turner, Constable, Flaxman, and Nollekens - and is said to have made his home at Petworth "a nursery of art and a college of agriculture."

Hariot, Thomas, 1560-1621 : Mathematician and astronomer.

Thomas Hariot (name variants include Harriot and Heriot) was a notable mathematician and astronomer. After obtaining his B.A. from Oxford University in 1580, he was engaged by Sir Walter Raleigh as his mathematical tutor. In 1585, Raleigh sent him out to Virginia as a surveyor with Sir Richard Grenville's expedition.

In 1588, he published "A Brief and True Report of the new-found Land of Virginia", one of the earliest examples of a statistical survey on a large scale. His inventions gave algebra its modern form and his use of telescopes was contemporaneous with Galileo's.

With his mathematical friends Walter Warner and Thomas Hughes, he became known as one of the "three magi" of the Earl of Northumberland, who in 1607 assigned him a residence at Sion House, where he continued his studies and observations until his death, on 2 July 1621, of a cancer in the nose.

Harriot divided his papers between Sir Thomas Aylesbury and Viscount Lisle. Aylesbury's share, transmitted to his son-in-law, the Earl of Clarendon, has never come to light, but Lord Lisle handed his share over to his father-in-law, the Earl of Northumberland and they descended from him to the Earl of Egremont. In 1784, they were discovered at Petworth Castle by Baron von Zach, buried beneath a pile of old stable accounts. A small part of the collection is still at Petworth, but in 1810 Lord Egremont presented the majority of the material to the British Library, where it is bound in eight large volumes. In 1915, the National Archives of Canada transcribed one small excerpt from Volume VIII of the Collection.
