His parents were Alexander McDougall, Sr. (born 17 March, 1765), and Catherine Buchanan (born 23 Feb. 1773), who were married in 1790 in the outskirts of Stirling, and who came to Halifax 6 August 1795 with two children born in Scotland. Young Alexander received his primary education in a school conducted by the Rev. John Farquerson until 13 years of age. He was then sent to the Pictou Academy. Finishing in the Academy, he began to study law. Alexander was admitted as an attorney-at-law on 19 Jan. 1825, and on 24 Jan. 1826, as barrister-at-law. In 1825 McDougall settled in Antigonish. In a short time his practice grew and he was looked upon as a leading lawyer. In 1836 McDougall was elected to the House of Assembly. In 1940 McDougall's term inmpublic office was suspended until 1942 when a vacancy occurred in the Legislative Council.mMcDougall served in the Legislative Council until 1948 when he was appointed to be a member of the Executive Council and Solicitor-General of the province of Nova Scotia. From 1848 to 1954 McDougall filled the office of Solicitor-General. McDougall was married at Antigonish on 24 Jan. 1831 to Elizabeth Ann Van Buskirk (nee Watson). They had one daughter, Katherine, who married James Edward Wilson of Halifax in 1866. Alexander McDougall died 13 March 1855. Sir Joseph Chisholm. "Hon. Alexander McDougall."
