William Upcott (1779-1845) was born in Oxfordshire, England, in 1779. He was the natural son of the portrait painter, Ozias Humphry (1742-1810), by Dolly Wickens, daughter of an Oxford shopkeeper. His surname of Upcott derived from the maiden name of his father's mother. He began his career as a bookseller, being assistant first to R.H. Evans of Pall Mall, and then to John Wright of Piccadilly, London. On 23 April 1806, however, he became assistant to the librarian of the London Institution and held that position until he retired, 30 May 1834. He died, unmarried, at Islington on 23 September 1845, and his large collection of books, manuscripts, prints and drawings were sold by Sotheby's in June 1846.
Dayrolles, Solomon, d. 1786 : Diplomatist.
Solomon Dayrolles (d. 1786) was the nephew and heir of James Dayrolles (d. 1739), king's resident at The Hague, 1706-1712, 1717-1738, and at Geneva, 1715-1717. Like his uncle, he was a diplomatist and with the assistance of his godfather, the politician and wit, Lord Chesterfield, he advanced rapidly in his career. He was master of the revels to George II, 1744; secretary to Lord Chesterfield, when he was ambassador to The Hague for the second time, 1745; gentleman usher of the black rod to Chesterfield, when he was lord-lieutenant of Ireland, 1745; resident at The Hague, 1747-1751, and at Brussels, 1751-1757. In 1751, he married Christabella (ca. 1733-1791), daughter of Colonel Peterson of Ireland, by whom he had one son and three daughters. He died in March 1786.Information additionnelle :Historique de la conservation :After the death of Solomon Dayrolles in 1786, his library was sold and his own official correspondence and that of his uncle, James Dayrolles, eventually found their way into the hands of William Upcott. After Upcott's death in 1845, a large part of his collection was purchased, in 1846, by the British Library, and the Dayrolles papers in it were catalogued as Additional Manuscripts 15866-15890. Add. MSS. 15915, which contains copies and translations of letters and papers of state, 1685-1764, was probably also part of the Dayrolles papers, and additional Dayrolles material is found in other parts of the Upcott collection, such as Add. MSS. 15946, which is a collection of original letters and autographs, chiefly official, of various English statesmen, 1702-1778. In 1931, a number of selections of Canadian interest were transcribed from the Dayrolles papers by the National Archives of Canada.Note sur l'emplacement des originaux :Originals with the British Library, London, England.Vedette-matière :- France - Foreign relations - North America, 1755 Captain Charles Watson, 1748
