This study of coal mining, past and present, focuses on the lives of the miners at the DOSCO mine at Glace Bay, Nova Scotia. Early mining techniques are depicted by etchings and still photos. The film examines above-ground operations at DOSCO, and follows miners on their 1,700 foot descent and 4 mile sojourn out under the bed of the Atlantic Ocean, where they labour in areas less than 4 feet in height. The combustible nature of the mine necessitated the use of non-electrical equipment in filming; hand-cranked tape recorders and cameras were used in the production, and the miners' safety lamps supplied the only source of light underground. <30mn>
