He graduated from the University of Edinburgh in 1961 with a M.A. in Prehistoric Archaeology. In 1962 he came to Canada to work as a historical archaeologist on the Louisbourg Restoration Programme of National Historic Sites Service (now Parks Canada). Walker became interested in using clay tobacco pipes to accurately date the strata found at excavation sites. In 1967 he won a Canada Council fellowship to study the clay tobacco pipe industry at the University of Bath. His exhaustive thesis was published by Parks Canada in 1977.
Walker joined the Ottawa headquarters of National Historic Sites Services in 1966 to oversee their excavations across Canada. In 1970 he became Head of Artifact Research. He was also Staff Archaeologist, 1974-1977, Acting Head of Historic Resources Impact Assessment and Head of Publications for the Research Division, 1977-1979. In 1979 he went to the National Museum of Man as Head of the Collections Management Section of the Archaelogical Survey of Canada where he was responsible for the recording, accessioning and conservation of artifacts from archaelogical sites across Canada. His last position was Head of the Historic Archaeological Programme, History Division, National Museum of Man. Walker was elected as a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of London in 1980.Information additionnelle :Note générale :Received in 1984 from Ms. S. Walker of Greely, Ontario through Dr. F.J.
