Spry and Joseph Frederick Wallet DesBarres from the papers of the third Duke of Portland relating to Canada. Two letters of George III to Portland concern political affairs in England and Ireland, 1783, 4 pages. Topics discussed include the American invasion of Canada. William Henry Cavendish Bentinck, 3rd Duke of Portland, travelled abroad in Germany, Poland and Italy, 1757 to 1761. He was a Member of the British Parliament, 1761 to 1762, a Harleian Trustee of the British Museum from 1764 until his death, and a Privy Councillor from 1765. He was First Lord of the Treasury and Prime Minister, April-December 1783, Chancellor of the University of Oxford from 1792 and Secretary of State for the Home Department, 1794-1801. From 1807 to 1809, he was once again First Lord of the Treasury and therefore, Prime Minister. He married Dorothy, only daughter of William Cavendish, 4th Duke of Devonshire, in 1766.
His original papers are found within the Portland Collection, at the University of Nottingham, Dept. of Manuscripts and Special Collections.Information additionnelle :Note générale :The originals were presented in 1965 by the estate of Mrs. Vivien O.de B.
