Talbot, John : Naval officer

John Talbot entered the Royal Navy in March 1784. In October 1809, after service and commands in the West Indies and the Mediterranean, he took command of the H.M.S. Victorious one of the fleet in the Mediterranean. In a naval engagement in February 1812, Talbot was severely wounded and the Victorious was sent home to be refitted. Still commanded by Talbot, the Victorious sailed for the West Indies. From the West Indies, she went to Halifax, N.S., where for a period Talbot was senior officer, and was involved in the blockade of New London, R.I.

In the summer of 1814, Talbot and the Victorious were sent to the Davis Staits, off Newfoundland, for the protection of the whale fishery. Grounding off Greenland early in July, the Victorious sustained so much damage that she was obliged to return to England, and in August 1814 she was paid off.

After Victorious, Talbot did not have any further sea service, although he ultimately rose to the rank of admiral on 23 November 1841, and died 7 July 1851 at Rhode Hill, near Lyme Regis, Dorset, England.
