Fonds consists of microfilmed journals kept by Francis McClintock during his four Arctic expeditions in search of Sir John Franklin, 1848-1859, together with supplementary journals kept by others during these expeditions, as well as originals and copies of documents left in the Arctic, 1851-1859.

McClintock, Francis Leopold, Sir, 1819-1907 : Francis Leopold McClintock participated in four Arctic searches for the lost expedition of Sir John Franklin (1786-1847). During 1848-1849, McClintock was second lieutenant on the Enterprise in Sir James Clark Ross's expedition along the coast of Somerset Island. In 1850-1851, he was first lieutenant of the Assistance and was responsible for the sledging parties in Horatio Thomas Austin's search among the Parry Islands. He was placed in command of the Intrepid in Edward Belcher's expedition from 1852-1854. From 1857 to 1859, he commanded the steam yacht Fox in an expedition funded at the personal cost of Lady Franklin, during which relics, skeletons and two records of the Franklin expediton were found on King William Island. He received many honours, including a knighthood, for his achievement in revealing the fate of the Franklin expedition.

The journals were microfilmed under the auspices of the National Library of Ireland from originals in the possession of H.F. McClintock, Ardee, Ireland, during 1951, and from originals amongst Admiralty records in the Public Record Office, London, England.
