Fonds consists of a diary kept by George Leith covering two periods. The first section traces his journey from Scotland, April 1834, to the Canadas via New York City and his return home in April 1835. The diary traces Leith's travels back and forth between Quebec City and Detroit as he investigates the possibility of settling in Canada as a farmer. Leith's observations tend to focus on farming concerns. However, there are a number of second-hand anecdotes on life in Upper Canada, a few comments on political matters and the inclusion of a few literary verses such as Mrs. Moodie's "A Canadian Song" and "The Canadian Woodsman".

The second section traces Leith's experiences from his return with his new wife in early 1836 to take up farming in the Hamilton area until July 1837. This section of the diary consists of daily accounts of farming life, concentrating on the weather, daily tasks and the cost of supplies. There are notes on the economic aspects of farming in Upper Canada and a ledger at the back of the diary listing Leith's expenditures during his initial exploratory trip.
