Fonds consists of "journals", 1833-1837, of Patrick Bell, written for his own entertainment and the information of his friends. Volume 1, 1833-1834, consists of an account of his travels from Scotland to Canada, via New York and Albany, which includes his impressions of North America, illustrated by sketch maps and diagrams of various river boats and canal locks, as well as by mathematical calculations relating to the Niagara Falls. Volume 2, 1834-1837, is a detailed description of features of Upper Canada life that interested him, such as his own daily routine, climate, fish and fishing in Lake Ontario, animal and plant life, agriculture, crops, implements, machinery, conveyances, and housing.

The descriptions are liberally illustrated by sketches. Both volumes contain separate sections for carefully kept meteorological observations, which include daily temperatures and weather notes, complete except for a few short periods when Bell was away from home. The material was copied in 1954.

Bell, Patrick, 1799-1869 : The Reverend Dr. Patrick Bell was the son of George Bell who, at the time of his son's birth, was tenant at Mid-Leoch, a farm in the Parish of Auchterhouse, a few miles northwest of Dundee, Scotland. Patrick Bell was educated at the University of St. Andrews. In 1827, while still a student, he worked on the construction of a reaping machine, which was first tried out in 1828 on the Perthshire farm of his brother George Bell. In 1833, Bell emigrated to Canada. For several years he appears to have worked as a tutor and lived in East Flamborough Township, Wentworth County, Upper Canada, before his return to Scotland.

He was ordained in 1843 and became Minister of the Parish of Carmylie, Arbroath, where he remained until his death. His services to agriculture were recognized by a honorary LL.D. from the University of St. Andrews, 1000 pounds from the Highland Society, and a piece of plate subscribed for by the farmers of Scotland and others.

Bell's original journals were presented in 1945 to the Library of Aberdeen University (where they are catalogued as MSS. 2137 and 2138) by the Emeritus Professor of Agriculture, James Hendrick (d. 1949).
