Fonds consists of a report, 1945, of a journey and conference in the U.S.S.R.; and a microfilm copy of field journals and reports, 1926-1964. The field journals relate to Dr. Porsild's botanical expeditions in Alaska and the Canadian north, 1926-1949, and in the Rocky Mountains, 1945-1957. There are journals concerning the introduction of reindeer to the Mackenzie Delta, 1926-1931 and journals relating to attendance at scientific conferences, 1945-1964. The journals are located on microfilm reel M-1958.

The fonds also contains photographic slides, 1945, that are views of Dr. A.E. Porsild's trip to Siberia, Russia and Finland.

Porsild, A. E., 1901-1977 : Dr. Alf Erling Porsild, botanist, was born and educated in Copenhagen, Denmark. He served as Assistant Botanist at the Danish Biological Station at Godhavn, Greenland, 1922-1925. In 1926, he and his brother Robert were invited by the Canadian Government to undertake a survey of reindeer grazing potential in northern Alaska and the Northwest Territories. Porsild spent the next ten years on reindeer study, manning a reindeer research station on the east side of the Mackenzie Delta, and engaging Lapps to teach the Eskimos herding of reindeer.

In 1935, he joined the National Museum of Canada and greatly enlarged the National Herbarium, travelling widely in boreal America collecting specimens. He was Canadian Consul in Greenland from 1941 to 1943. He became Chief Botanist of the National Museum of Canada, 1946-1967. He became a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada in 1946 and the Arctic Institute of North America in the same year, and the Swedish Phytogeographical Society in 1958. Among the many medals and awards, he received were the Massey medal, 1966, and the Lawson medal, 1971.
