Fonds consists of textual records, 1928-1975: correspondence, articles and speeches, personal diaries.

The fonds also contains copies of photographs, 1920-1945, that are portraits of Hon. R.L. Bordon, R.B. Bennett, W.L. Mackenzie King, Ernest Lapointe, C.D. Howe, and Mr. J. Alex Hume.

Hume, Alex, 1900-1976 : J. Alexander Hume, known as Alex, a journalist, began his newspaper career with the Signal of Goderich Ont. from 1921 to 1924, serving simultaneously as a correspondent for the Toronto Globe and the London Advertiser. He was chief political reporter on the London Advertiser 1924-1928. He joined the Ottawa Citizen in 1928 and became a member of the Press Gallery.

In 1941-1942 he served as private secretary to J.T. Thorson, Minister of National War Services. He acted at various times as parliamentary correspondent for different Southam newspapers, British United Press, the London Advertiser, and the London Free Press. He retired from the Ottawa Citizen in 1965. As a political reporter of note, Alex Hume developed close personal relationships with numerous figures in federal politics, particularly with members of the Liberal Party including Prime Minister St-Laurent.

The textual records were acquired in 1976 from J.A. Hume, through his nephew, Dr. J.N.P. Hume of Toronto, Ont. The copies of photographs were made from originals loaned to the National Archives of Canada.
