Hudson's Bay Company : The Puget's Sound Agricultural Company developed from a proposal made in 1832 by John McLoughlin. Six years later, a farm was started at Cowlitz under Chief Factor James Douglas. By 1839-1840, the Puget's Sound Agricultural Company had been formed. Shareholders were restricted to stockholders of the Hudson's Bay Company and therefore, control was strongly weighted in favour of the company's governor and committee. John McLoughlin was appointed manager and farms were begun at Nisqually and Fort Vancouver.

The company intended to breed sheep and cattle, and to sponsor settlement by immigrant farming families who would lease their land from the company. In return for providing the lease, clearing the land, and providing the livestock, the company received the right to market the produce and half the increase of the stock. Immigration from Great Britain did not meet the company's expectations, and in 1840, Duncan Finlayson was instructed to bring settlers from the Red River Colony. The company encountered some difficulty in persuading settlers to stay, while at the same time attempting to counter an influx of American squatters.

In 1869, the Joint Commission appointed to settle the dispute over the Oregon territories awarded the company $200,000 for their properties in Oregon, after which it confined its activities to farms in British Columbia.
