Fonds consists of correspondence with Sir John A. Macdonald concerning the election of McCarthy to Parliament, Ontario politics, and patronage, 1872-1884, pp. 1-58; correspondence concerning the Liberal Conservative Union, chiefly party organization, and the operations of The Empire, 1886-1888, pp. 59-147 H; correspondence concerning the Imperial Federation League, organization, officers, proposals regarding Empire federation, and trade, 1889-1892, pp. 147 I - 181 M; correspondence concerning the Equal Rights League, chiefly reports from the organizer, W.G. Fee, 1893-1895, pp. 181N-385. The fonds also contains a photograph of McCarthy, [ca. 1898].

McCarthy, D'Alton, 1836-1898 : D'Alton McCarthy, born in Ireland, came to Canada in 1847. He was called to the bar of Upper Canada in 1858 He was a member of Parliament, 1876-1898. For part of this time he was engaged in Conservative Party organization as president of the Liberal Conservative Union and a director of The Empire. In 1889 he opposed the policy of the government regarding the Jesuit Estates Act and became leader of the Equal Rights movement.

When the Imperial Federation League was formed in Canada, McCarthy became its first president. In 1893 he became president of the Equal Rights League, really a separate party differing from the Conservative Party chiefly on fiscal policy and the Manitoba Schools question. In the election of 1896 he was not regarded as an opponent of the Liberal Party. See: Canadian Encyclopedia, p. 1047; Encyclopedia Canadiana, vol. 6, p. 235.
