Bell, Thomas Miller, 1923-1996 : Thomas Miller Bell, born in 1923 at St. John, N.B., received his education from the University of New Brunswick, B.C.L. Upon his successful admission to the New Brunswick Bar in 1951, he formed a partnership with two prominent lawyers that became the firm of Logan, Bell and Church. He served as an officer in the British Merchant Navy prior to entering University and during World War II, he saw service in the Atlantic, Mediterranean and Far Eastern theatres of war. In 1945, he was appointed Aide-de-Camp to the Lieutenant-Governor of New Brunswick.

In 1952, Bell served as assistant to the secretary of the New Brunswick Progressive Conservative Association. He was a Member of Parliament, representing St. John-Albert later St. John-Lancaster, from 1953 until his retirement in 1974. He served as Parliamentary Assistant to the Minister of Trade and Commerce, 1957-1959, and Parliamentary Secretary, 1959-1963, to the Minister of Justice. In July 1968, he was appointed Chief Opposition Whip and he held that office until his retirement. As well, Bell was President of the Young Progressive Conservatives of Canada from 1956 to 1957.
