Item is a microfilmed volume III of the Longmore Pamphlet collection, consisting of "Voyage and Journey of the 2nd Batt. Scots Fusilier Guards from Southampton to Montreal during the winter of 1861-1862", by a soldier of the regiment (London, John Wilson, 1862). This material is located on microfilm reel A-880.

Longmore, Thomas, 1816-1895 : Surgeon

Thomas Longmore, son of Thomas Longmore, Surgeon, R.N., was educated in London at the Merchant Taylors' School and at Guy's Hospital. He entered the Army Medical Department in 1845 and was appointed surgeon in 1854. He served throughout the Crimean campaign 1854-1855. In 1856 he became a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons and served in the Bengal campaigns and the Sepoy Mutiny, 1857-1859. He was promoted to the rank of Deputy Inspector General in 1858.

In 1860 he was appointed Professor of Surgery at the Army Medical School, and he became a recognized authority in medical surgery, field medical organization, transportation, and equipment. He was made a knight of the Legion of Honour in 1867. Two years later he published A Manual of Ambulance Transport. Longmore represented Great Britain at several international conferences on military medicine. In 1886 he was created Knight Bachelor and in 1893, he retired and died two years later.
