Collection consists of microfilmed copies of portions of the so-called captured German documents: archival material consisting of records of the National Socialist German Labour and of the Deutsches Ausland-Institut, 1930-1939; records of the Reich Leader of the S.S. and Chief of the German Police, 1934-1945; and reports to and from Ribbentrop's office and the German Foreign Office, 1936-1944. This material is located on microfilm reels K-44 to K-57.

There are also captured German records on microfilm covering the period 1908-1922 and 1931-1945, as well as microfilm copies of other records, 1885-1926. This material is located on microfilm reels K-147 to K-168.

Germany, Captured German documents, W.W.II : When the Russians occupied Berlin in 1945 they examined German official archival records, shipping some material to Russia, destroying some, and leaving the rest. The American zone was similarly looted. Some documents were restored to their original owners or successor institutions; others were shipped to the United States and England for microfilming. They are popularly known today as captured German documents and related records.

Barely intact even in 1945, these records had been damaged during Allied bombing raids and sheltered in conditions which were not conducive to their longterm survival. Moreover, they were also burned by retreating Germany army and SS units and by individuals seeking to hide criminal activity. Documents from an intact common provenance were often dispersed at the end of the war. American, French, British and Russian troops took papers left behind by the Germans for tactical information, intelligence, occupation government, war crimes trials and historical study.

By 1960, many of the original records had been returned to successor institutions in West Germany, and from the Soviet Union to depositories in East Germany. In addition to the microfilms at the National Archives in Washington, many original records in many different languages were dispersed to specialized research centres such as the Library of Congress, the YIVO Institute of Jewish Research, etc.

Historique de la conservation :

The originals of documents on reels K-147 to K-168 were copied by Dr. Boris Celovsky and presented to the National Archives of Canada in 1982. Reports to and from Ribbentrop's office and the German Foreign Office, 1936-1944, microfilm reels K-53 to K-57, were also presented by Dr. Celovsky. Records of the National Socialist German Labor Party and of the Deutsches Ausland-Institut, 1930-1939, microfilm reels K-44 to K-52, were copied from originals in the possession of the Americans and British. The originals were later returned to Germany.
