The McGinnis fonds consists of the business, legal, and family records of several individuals and families as well as a substantial group of papers related to seigneuries held by the Christie family and administrated by McGinnis. This material is available on microfilm reels H-2926 to H-2942.

McGinnis (family) : William McGinnis, son of John, was born in 1785 and died in 1880. He married Elizabeth Dunn and had nine children. Starting in 1835, he administered the Christie seigneuries and became an entrepreneur in the Upper Richelieu Valley. His brother, Richard, was a manufacturer at Christieville with William. When Richard died in 1853, his place in the partnership was taken by William's son, Robert. In 1835 William McGinnis became an agent for the Christie estate which was involved in litigation until 1874, when the estate's legal problems were settled by a decision of the Privy Council.

The estate's legal entanglements started when the property was entailed by General Gabriel Christie. At the time of his death in 1799, Christie possessed the seigniories of Bleury, De Léry, Lacolle (Beaujeu), Noyan and Repentigny. The estate fell to his son Napier, who took his mother's surname, Burton. When Napier Christie Burton died in 1834, the estate was inherited by William Plenderleath Christie, the natural son of Gabriel Christie, under the terms of the will. William Christie held the property as well as the seigniory of Sabrevois until his death in 1845. Under his will the estate was divided among his half-sisters and a nephew, Gabriel Christie but legal disputes resulted.
