The entrybook attributed to William Macdonald (volume 1) records his activities as surveyor and agent for Crown Lands in the Gaspé region, circa 1838-1857. The bill of survey for the stranded schooner LAURA T CHESTER (volume 2) was issued in 1873 by Jno. Fox, a JP of the Gaspé district. The three volumes recording court proceedings at Percé and Douglastown (volumes 3-5) were kept in 1809-1812, 1819, and 1823-1825 for William Crawford, Judge of the Provincial Court for the Inferior District of Gaspé.Provenance :Biographie/Histoire administrative :Gaspé district, Quebec : The name Gaspé has long been applied to a geographic region as well as to judicial or administrative jurisdictions. Gaspé was among several regions identified for administration by a Lieutenant Governor in 1775. The first incumbent, Nicholas Cox, was also named Superintendent of Fisheries in the region. The judicial district of Gaspé was one of five established by a Proclamation of 24 July 1788. The first Sheriff and Justices of the Peace were then appointed.
Few municipal institutions existed before 1842; officials such as the deputy Land Surveyors acted under directions from provincial authorities.Information additionnelle :Note générale :Note the records of the Gaspé Land Commissioners in RG 1, L 7, volumes 79-80 (also available on microfilm). Note also that the quality of transcription in volume 1 is suspect, names such as Schoolbred being significantly misread.Vedette-matière :- Perce (Quebec) - Court records, 1809-1825 Perce (Quebec), 1789-1857
